The two photographs below were taken in a City Mission charity shop. The time and effort taken to make this display shows that thrift stores are no longer a jumble-sale like pile of saggy pilled sweaters that smell musty.
This one interested me because it is now officially ‘retro’ to have the old-style typewriter font and the cursive handwriting. I have found that fewer and fewer of my students can read or write cursive.

Below are the amazing L’Oreal Elvital hair products I wrote about previously. . They are incredibly popular, so several of the products are always completely sold out. As soon as they refill the shelf, the products just fly off again. A really good sign. This particular shop has supersized products for less than the regular price (about $3 per 400ml bottle of shampoo or conditioner).
And this one was really interesting – they were unpacking boxes so I could not get a really good shot, but this is a whole wall of all the products in the shop with a purple tint. They have displayed everything from fabric softener to toilet cleaner together with beauty products and cookies. I am not sure I have ever seen such a mix of products displayed on the same wall before. It was quite effective and could probably encourage people to look at things they normally walk past, just because of the display.
I also saw this product name, which made me chuckle. It took me a second to get it, though!
…and then these t shirts really baffled me. They were in stores aiming at a male demographic between 16 and 45, I would say. But all these bands predate them by decades. Are old bands retro? Or cool? Have there been no t-shirt-worthy people since then?
